Clan wars matchmaking: How it works.
Some interesting points brought up on the Supercell forum.
- There are many things to consider in preparation for a clan war such as your clan members (their active participation or not), your strategy, base preparation, troop preparation and tactics. Consider these two important factors:
- It is important to know how your attack phase will play out, will your clan attack randomly whoever they please or will you have a specific plan of attack. Make sure that your clan has a system of attack that you stick to. Some things you should consider is not attacking bases that have been beaten already unless you have no other option since this negates the attack before it and loses an opportunity to gain more stars. Use your preparation day to scout out the enemy, if this is hard for some people assign clan members to the task of searching for vulnerabilities in enemy bases
- War time base design is another short coming of some clans. Encourage your soldiers to design base layouts for war time. Or to adopt bases that can be easily converted over from farming to trophy bases. Centralized CC’s and hero’s make a huge difference as well as embedded defenses. Higher level clans should consider the abundance of hog and balloon attacks and adopt bases that are more suited to the numerous types of attacks they will see in clan wars
Proper Base Development is essential to your Soldiers
In response to many frustrations over the use of hogs and dragons here are a few tips to combat this strategy. What it all boils down to is proper base development.

In response to many frustrations over the use of hogs and dragons here are a few tips to combat this strategy. What it all boils down to is proper base development.
- First make sure that all your members max out their defenses before they upgrade their town halls. This is the number one thing that will make you a huge target in a clan war. I tend to attack the guy with the underdeveloped base before I attack the guy with maxed out defenses whether I’m launching a air balloon raid or a hog attack. (Mortars, WizTowers, and air defense) are most important. Also make sure you don’t forget to max those big bombs because they are the hog destroyer.
- Proper trap placement can be what stands between a 2 or a 3 star victory and once clan wars progresses this could make the difference in winning wars. One of the main things that will stop marauding hogs is good inner base trap placement and funneling techniques. For those that have not seen the thread on funneling here is the link.

- Proper triangulation of defensive units is a must. A lot of people are too relaxed when it comes to their air defense placement. Make sure that your air defense units are imbedded in your base and not on an outlying wall. This will make you the number one target of a mass balloon attack or a mass dragon attack. Also wiz towers prevent balloon and dragon attacks as well because of their ability to attack ground and air units. Here is a picture of a good base. Notice the triangulation of Mortars, Air Defense, and wizard towers.

- And lastly if you are having a hard time with hogs, dragons or balloons then try some predesigned bases that are posted online. Don’t be embarrassed to use a base that thousands are using. Remember the old saying if its not broke don’t fix it. There is a reason all those people use those bases. Some people don’t have the time to spend 4-5 hours developing a base and preloads can be a temporary fix to your problem.
- Centralize your barbarian king and your Clan Castle as well. Look at picture example #1 above, as you can see it would be extremely difficult to draw out the Barb King and CC troops without actually breeching the walls of the base.
